12 Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva (भगवान शिव जी के 12 ज्‍योतिर्लिंग): According to the Puranas in Hinduism, Shiva ling are worshiped as Jyotirlingas located in the twelve places where they themselves appeared. There are 12 in the total number of these Jyotirlingas (ज्‍योतिर्लिंग). It is said that a person who takes the name of these twelve Jyotirlingas every morning and evening, the sins committed by his seven births are erased from the memory of this linga (लिंगों).

Origin of 12 Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva, ‘Shiva’ means ‘welfare’. Linga means ‘creation’. There are two types of Shivalinga – the first is a meteoroid-like black oval which is also known as “Jyotirlinga”.   1. Shri Somnath Jyotirlinga: This Jyotirlinga is installed in the world-famous temple called Somnath on the seashore in the Kathiawar region of Gujarat province. Earlier this region was known as Prabhaskshetra. It was here that Lord Sri Krishna made his Leela after making the arrow of a hunter named Zara. The Jyotirlinga here is considered to be the earliest Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva. It was founded by Chandra dev. Situated in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, this Jyotirlinga holds great mythological and historical significance.
  2. Shri Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga: This Jyotirlinga sites Srimallikarjuna on Mount Srisail on the banks of the Krishna River in the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. It is called Kailash of the South. The glory of this place has been told in many scriptures. According to Mahabharata, worshiping Lord Shiva on Mount Srisail gives the fruits of performing Ashwamedha Yagya (अश्वमेध यज्ञ). It is even written in some texts that just by having a vision of the peak of Srisailam, all kinds of sufferings of the spectators run away, they get eternal happiness and they are freed from the cycle of traffic.

Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga: Baba Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas built in the 6th century BCE, near the saintly Salila Shipra beach, in Ujjain, a pilgrimage center in Madhya Pradesh. It is called Mahakal. “Kaal” has two meanings – one is time and the other is death. Mahakal is said to be ‘Mahakal’ because, in ancient times, the standard time of the entire world was determined from here, that is why this Jyotirlinga has been named ‘Mahakaleshwar’. According to the legend, the establishment of this Shivling is associated with the legend of King Chandrasen and Gop-Balak.
  4. Shri Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga: Omkareshwar is the fourth of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Omkar was first spoken to the head of the Kishtikarta Brahma. The Veda recitation does not even begin without “ॐ”. The same Jyotirlinga form of Omkar is Shri Omkareshwar, that is, here Lord Shiva has appeared in Omkar Swarup. Jyotirlinga is the place where Lord Shiva himself appeared and is established in the form of Jyoti. All sins are consumed by the sight of Pranav Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga. In the Puranas, the glory of the Omkareshwar region is mentioned in Skanda Purana, Shiva Purana, and Vayu Purana. Omkareshwar has a total of 68 pilgrimages, here 33 deities reside. There are 108 impressive Shivling here in divine form. The mother of Narmada, who is expanding 84 plans, is a giant form of Shri Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, about 77 km away from Indore, the main city of Madhya Pradesh. And this is the only Jyotirlinga which is situated on the north bank of the Narmada River.

Sri Kedarnath Jyotirlinga Temple: Lord Shiva, one of the Panch Kedar Temple and Char Dham Yatra Temple in Uttarakhand, is at an altitude of 12 thousand feet near Badrinath Dham in the Himalayas of Uttarakhand. One has to go from Haridwar to Rishikesh and from Rishikesh to Gaurikund and then climb the hill route by foot and horse. The story of this Jyotirlinga is associated with the Pandavas in the Mahabharata. The Swayambhu Shivling located here is very ancient. Adi Shankaracharya got this temple renovated.
  6. Shri Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga: This Jyotirlinga is situated on the banks of the Bhima River in the Sahyadri ranges of Maharashtra. This place falls about 180 km from Nashik. Here Lord Shiva killed the Bhimasura demon. One can also go from Talegaon near Pune.
  7. Shri Vishwanath Jyotirlinga: Shri Vishweshwar Jyotirlinga is located in Kashi Nagar, Varanasi district of Uttar Pradesh. It is also called Banaras or Kashi. It is said that the person who gives up his life on the border of Varanasi, is freed from the jungle of this world because Lord Vishwanath himself recites the “Taraka Mantra” when he dies. It is said that Kashi is the new city in the three worlds, which sits on the trident of Lord Shiva. It has been remembered by many names like Anandavan, Anandakanan, Avi Mukta Kshetra and Kashi.
  8. Shri Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga: This Jyotilig is about 25 km from Nashik, Maharashtra, on the banks of the Godavari River is. The place is associated with Maharishi Gautama and his wife Gautami.
  9. Shri Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga: This Jyotirlinga is located in Deoghar, Jharkhand. It is said that Ravana got a body from Shiva by doing severe penance, which he wanted to establish in Lanka, but from Shiv Leela that body was established in Vaidyanath itself.
  10. Shri Nageshwar Jyotirlinga: This is Jyotirlinga, about 27 km from a place called Hingoli in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra. The Daaruka demon residing here in the Daruka forest was destroyed by a Vaishya named Supriya with the “Pashupatastra” weapon given by Shiva.
  11. Shri Rameswaram Jyotirlinga: This Jyotirlinga is related to Lord Rama. Ram Ji arrived at the southern end of the country for the invasion of Lanka along with the army of monkeys. Here, Shri Ram worshiped Shiva by making a pint of sand and sought a boon from Shiva for victory over Ravana. Rameswaram is located in Tamil Nadu. One can go here by bus and rail.
  12. Shri Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga: There are caves of world-famous Ajanta-Alera near Daulatabad in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra. This is where Jyotirling is located. It is said that by seeing the Dhrishneshwar Jyotirlinga, one gets salvation by attaining descent. This temple was built by Goddess Ahilyabai Holkar. Located away from the city, this temple is full of simplicity. This is the last Jyotirlinga in Dwadash Jyotirlingas. It is also called Ghushmeshwar, Ghudrneshwar or Ghrishneshwar (घुश्मेश्वर, घुसृणेश्वर या घृष्णेश्वर).
